Freelancing
Going from solo dev to trusted partner
Clients do not hire code they hire reliability. The developers who get retained long-term are not the most technically brilliant.
Over-communicate
Send updates before the client has to ask. A 2-minute WhatsApp message on Friday saves an anxious weekend.
Document everything
Every project gets an INSTRUCTIONS.md. Clients choose to stay because I add value, not because they have no alternative.
Under-promise, over-deliver
If you think it takes 2 weeks, say 3. Deliver in 2.5. Clients remember the surprise, not the quote.
Think beyond the build
Ask about maintenance, training, content strategy. Be their guide, not just their coder.
The goal is to be the developer they never want to replace.
